VOA Radiogram set for May 25-26

Thanks to everyone for another set of excellent reception reports for the VOA Radiogram of 25-26 May 2013. I will try to respond personally to your reports in the next few days.

During the past weekend, EasyPal digital images were received successfully throughout Europe and North America. You can see a gallery of some of the received images here:

voaradiogram.net/post/51385444401/voa-radiogram-easypal-images-received-100-or-0

Reviewing the advantages of EasyPal versus MFSK32:

EasyPal:

1) When received successfully, the picture is perfect.

2) Takes less time to transmit than MFSK32 and most SSTV images of the same size.

3) No problems with slant if soundcards are not calibrated.

MFSK32:

1) If the signal drops below a certain level, or if interference exceeds a certain level, no EasyPal image will be received at all. Under similar reception conditions, MFSK32, which uses an analog frequency shift keying system for images, will allow the an image to be seen, even if the quality is not perfect.

2) MFSK32 images allows images of different heights and widths, including small images which can be transmitted quickly. The gray tone MFSK32 image option allows even faster transmission.

3) MFSK32 images can be decoded by more than one software program under more than one operating system. There is only one EasyPal program, and it works only under the Windows operating system.

I welcome your comments and suggestions about the transmission of images via shortwave broadcast. Weighing all of the above factors, I am inclined to adopt MFSK32 as the primary image mode for VOA Radiogram. However, the EasyPal images are so impressive that I will continue to include some in future programs.

On VOA Radiogram for the weekend of 1 and 2 June 2013, we will continue to compare MFSK32 and EasyPal images. Here is the lineup for the program:

3:44 MFSK16: Program preview
3:17 MFSK32: VOA News story about Olympics wrestling
3:16 MFSK32: VOA News story about 2013 hurricane season
1:10 MFSK32: File image of Atlantic hurricane
2:53 MFSK32: VOA News story about colliding galaxies
1:04 MFSK32: Image of the colliding galaxies
1:21 MFSK32: Introduction to MFSK64 and EasyPal
1:30 MFSK64: Same VOA News story about colliding galaxies
:39 EasyPal text: Same VOA News story about galaxies
2:38 EasyPal image: Colliding galaxies
2:38 EasyPal image: Soyuz capsule being moved to launch site
1:09 MFSK16 closing announcements
:29 Surprise mode of the week

To decode EasyPal text and images, download the 4-May-2013 version of the program from vk4aes.com.

To decode the MFSK modes, use Fldigi from w1hkj.com or another digital decoding program.

VOA Radiogram slated for May 25-26

Thanks to everyone who sent reception reports, audio samples, screenshots, etc., from last weekend's VOA Radiogram. The SSTV modes have performed well but, according to most your reports, MFSK32 images provide better images.
On VOA Radiogram the weekend of May 25-26, we will continue our experiments with images via shortwave broadcast. The MFSK32 and SSTV modes are analog. Now we will try purely digital images using EasyPal software.
Download EasyPal from vk4aes.com. After EasyPal is installed, go to Setup > Setup c/s-soundcard-PTT > Soundcard and select the soundcard you use to receive VOA Radiogram.
In EasyPal, click the RX button to receive images. You should see a waterfall along the left side of the interface. The software will indicate how many segments have been received. Unlike SSTV and MFSK32 images, you will not see the picture slowly form on the software interface. Instead, when a sufficient number of segments has been received, the picture will appear instantaneously.
Will EasyPal work in a shortwave broadcast environment? I have no idea, but it's worth trying.
Here is the lineup for today's program:
MFSK16: Opening announcements (now)
MFSK32: VOA news story about the comet ISON (4:07)
MFSK32: NASA image of the comet ISON (1:03)
MFSK32: VOA news story about new train lines in South Korea
(3:22)
MFSK32: Image of the South Korean train (3:57)
MFSK16: Introduction to EasyPal (1:06)
EasyPal: Same image of the South Korean train (2:38)
EasyPal: Image of the cicada (large insect) transmitted last week
in SSTV and MFSK32 (2:44)
EasyPal: Text (:19)
MFSK16: Closing announcements (1:09)
Surprise mode of the week (:27)
Please send reception reports to radiogram@voanews.com

I hope you can tune in and decode this weekend.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 - 19 May 2013

Solar activity reached high levels during the week, in fact the highest levels of activity since 2013 began. Between 13 and 14 May, newly-numbered Region 1748 (N11, L=296, class/area=Eki/310) produced an X2/1n flare at 13/1605Z and an X3/2b flare at 14/0111Z. Both events produced several radio emissions. Three Tenflares were observed at 14/0115Z (640 sfu), 14/0141Z (190 sfu), and 14/0203Z (370 sfu). A Type-II radio sweep was observed at 14/0107Z with an estimated velocity of 1514 km/s, in conjunction with a Type-IV radio sweep at 14/0113Z. SDO/AIA 193A showed a flare on the East limb at N12 from 14/0009-0154 and 14/0206-0224Z. A dimming and wave was observed over the east hemisphere and North Pole. Two distinct halo
coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were subsequently observed on LASCO imagery. The first appeard in C2 coronagraph imagery at 14/0125Z and grew to a full HALO CME by 14/0224Z. The second event appeared at 14/0200Z with loop edge over the East and expanded to a partial HALO 280 degrees in width.

Solar activity remained at high levels on 15 May. Region 1748 grew to a Dki/beta-gamma-delta and produced an X1/2n flare at 15/0148Z associated with a Type II radio sweep (estimated shock speed 501 km/s), a Type IV radio sweep, a 440 sfu Tenflare; and a fast, assymetric halo CME. The CME speed was observed in LASCO C2
coronagraph imagery at 15/0148Z and expanded to a full HALO CME by 15/0248Z. SDO/AIA 193/211/304 showed the flare at 15/0124-0212Z which produced a faint dimming in the Northeast and North direction and a wave over the East hemisphere. The CME had and earthward component and its western flank reached Earth on 18 May at 0112Z.

Activity declined to moderate levels on 16 May with a single M1 flare from Region 1748 at 16/2153Z. Moderate levels continued through 17 May when Region 1748 produced an M3/2b flare at 17/0857Z. Type II (376 km/s) and Type IV radio bursts, as well as a 420 sfu Tenflare, were observed with this event. At 17/0912Z, LASCO/C2 coronagraph imagery observed a CME erupting from the east limb. It
grew to a full halo CME by 17/0948Z and was estimated to be moving at approximately 1498 km/s. The CME reached Earth on 19 May at 2221Z.

The remainder of the week was dominated by low levels of activity as Region 1748 shrank to less than half its largest extent. The largest flare of the latter part of the week was a C9 observed on the east limb at 19/1750Z. The other regions on the visible disk throughout the week were relatively inactive, producing only low-level C-class activity.

A 10 MeV proton flux greater than 10 pfu at geosynchronous orbit event began at 15/1325Z, reached a maximum flux of 41 pfu at 17/1720Z, and ended at 18/1445Z. The 10 MeV flux remains enhanced at the time of this report. The event was attributed to the X1/2n flare at 15/0148Z.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels all week.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to minor storm levels with the arrival of two CMEs during the week. The first CME, which was observed leaving the sun on 15 May, passed the ACE spacecraft at 18/0023Z and arrived at Earth at 18/0112Z with a 31nT sudden impulse. Activity reached minor storm levels by 18/0300Z and remained there through the end of the 0300-0600Z synoptic period.
Activity then dropped to active, unsettled, then quiet levels during the subsequent periods. The following evening, active levels were observed during the 0000-0300Z synoptic period.

The second CME, which left the sun on 17 May, passed the ACE spacecraft at 19/2221Z and arrived at Earth at 19/2306Z with a 29 T sudden impulse. Activity increased to active levels during the 2100-0000Z synoptic period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 May - 15 June 2013

Solar activity is expected to be low to moderate throughout the forecast period. High levels of activity are possible through 25 May and again after 7 June associated with Region 1748.

There is a chance for proton events at geosynchronous orbit, particularly through 25 May and again after 7 June associated with Region 1748.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels from 24-31 May associated with a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach minor to major storm levels on 20 May in response to the 17 May coronal mass ejection. In the absence of any Earth-directed coronal mass ejections, the remainder of the forecast period is expected to be characterized by quiet to unsettled levels of activity with the possible exception of 28 May, when another geoeffective coronal hole high speed stream
becomes geoeffective and brings active levels.

HCJB dedicates new broadcast facility

HCJB staff unveil a plaque which reads, "HCJB Australia International Broadcast  Facility. Dedicated to the glory of God. 21st April 2013. 'So that all may hear'  (Romans 10:14)."

"Prayer and miracles were very much a part of this 24-year story," says Wayne Pederson of HCJB Global.

David Maindonald seemed incredulous as he reflected on his 24-year vision to air the gospel via shortwave radio from Australia to the Asia Pacific Region.

“Yes, the story of HCJB Global-Australia is truly a story of what God has done,” he told a crowd at the dedication of the ministry’s new international broadcast site in Kununurra, adjacent to the original site that had been used to broadcast since 2003.  “And we want to give Him all the glory,” he commented, referring to an Old Testament Bible verse, “See what God has done!” (Numbers 23:23, NIV).

Others urged him to abandon what was called in 1989 his “far-fetched” vision, foreseeing obstacles in acquiring radio licenses and land for the site. When potential donors were approached with the idea, they predicted problems finding staff and money for the project.

“That wasn’t easy to handle,” related Maindonald, who led the mission’s Australia  office for nearly two decades. Among the 100 attendees at the April 21 event, braving  100-degree (Fahrenheit) heat and biting insects, was HCJB Global President Wayne Pederson, who deemed as a miracle the station’s presence on the shortwave frequencies. The facilities broadcast the gospel in 26 languages from Kununurra near
the northern tip of Western Australia.

“It’s reaching some of the most populous and least-reached places of the world—going into Japan, China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia,” Pederson said later in an audio report.

Excerpts from listeners’ letters were featured in a brochure distributed at the ceremony. One listener had written from India’s Gujarat state, “We do not have a church. Radio programs are a blessing for us to know about Jesus. We listen to Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi programs. The reception is good. Pray that my family and I and would accept Jesus too.”

A listener in Indonesia wrote, “Your station is totally different from any other I’ve  ever known. It brings peace, joy and hope—things that have been lost in my life for  quite a long time.”

Pederson outlined some of the trials encountered along the way. “Through many years  of overcoming regulations, federal permissions, local clearances, financial  challenges and power line difficulties, this station is now a reality,” he said. Then  he coupled those comments with explanations of bargains obtained to broadcast from the site.

“The curtain antenna came from Croatia. It was brand new but it was intended by the communists to send propaganda all across the former Soviet Union. The towers were bought from the Australian Army for 5 cents on the dollar. Those are scrap metal prices! The transmitters are the refurbished transmitters from Radio Station HCJB in Ecuador, now being repurposed to reach this part of the world.”

Also attending the ceremony were HCJB Global Asia Pacific Executive Director Ty Stakes, Australian Member of Parliament Barry Haase and Meg Shedley, who turns 90 this year. Back in 1997 when the Australian government still wasn’t issuing international broadcast licenses, she and her husband, Don, donated a 200-acre farm in Kununurra in faith that it could serve as an international shortwave site.

“This site has so many advantages,” John Stanley had said of the site at that time. An engineer who helped to staff the mission’s shortwave site in Ecuador decades ago, Stanley serves as an international broadcasting consultant.

“Assuming that a license can be obtained, it would be difficult to see it as anything other than God’s provision,” Stanley had concluded. After the towers were procured, staff members and countless volunteers began erecting them on the donated land that was also used to raise sugarcane. The applications for broadcast licenses were turned down three times however, according to Maindonald. Then an unexpected answer came on April 18, 2001.

“The laws of Australia were changed, and we were given not one but four international broadcasting licenses, and we had to be on air within two years,” he recounted. “Suddenly the dream of international broadcasting came alive again.”

An HC100 (100,000-watt) shortwave transmitter that had been shipped from Ecuador to the U.S. was in turn shipped to Australia just as U.S. dockworkers went on strike. In late 2002 it arrived in Australia, where station staff needed every bit of time to get it operational in time for the deadline. Negotiations with authorities resulted in more than $100,000 in duty and taxes being waived. The shortwave station went on
the air on Jan. 5, 2003, with five hours of programming to the South Pacific. A month later the South Asia broadcasts to India began.

Although well-suited to shortwave broadcasting, the original site was too small for expansion. “It was always intended to be temporary,” according to Dale Stagg, Australian director and CEO. “Basically, when the licenses were granted we had a two-year timeframe to get on the air so we had to get up and running as best we could and look to future development beyond that time. The new site is part of a 1,200-acre parcel of land leased from the state government about a mile from the original site.” The Shedley property is now used for staff housing.

In 2005 a high-quality curtain antenna was purchased from a radio station in Croatia for a quarter of its market value and erected three years later. In 2006 a second HC100 was shipped to Australia. The 21-year lease from the Western Australia government for the 1,200-acre site was also signed in 2006. In 2011 the high-tension power line was installed along with a donated parabolic antenna from Ecuador.

In 2012 one of the existing transmitters was relocated to the new transmitter building, and broadcasts began at the new site in July 2012. In March 2013 broadcasts commenced using both 100-kw transmitters.

“India, one of our priority countries, has a population of over 1.2 billion people,” Stagg said. “Sixty percent of India’s population does not even have access to FM, so shortwave for India is still a crucial means of communication.”

“A third HC100 coming in a few months will be digital, enabling us to reach a whole new audience with the clear, digital sounds of shortwave,” added Pederson. “[Our Australian partners] are dedicated people, and they've done a great job. You should see this impressive facility.”

“Our broadcast site gives us great access to the Asia Pacific Region,” Stagg recounted. “Our region contains more than 4 billion people and many of the world’s unreached people groups.”

Even though the station is on-air, something's missing.

"The need is for more and more teachers and radio personnel that can produce programs," states Pederson.

Your prayers are needed to keep this project going.

"Continue to pray that God would supply the people and the financial resources to get the job done," Pederson requests.

Here is the lineup:

MFSK16 (2:28) Preview
