Shortwave Radiogram adds Saturday transmission to schedule

Images received by Rawad in Saudi Arabia, 25 June, 2030-2100 UTC, 11580 kHz ...

Special thanks to Kim Elliott for including my book image in last weekend's images. (Gayle Van Horn)

Hello friends,

I am pleased to announce the addition of a fourth transmission of Shortwave Radiogram. It is Saturday at 1600-1630 UTC on 9400 kHz. If the day and time seem familiar, they are the same as the the most popular broadcast of VOA Radiogram. The, frequency, however is different. And if the frequency seems familiar, it is the same 9400 kHz via Space Line in Kostinbrod, Bulgaria, used by The Mighty KBC for its Giant Jukebox show, Saturday 1500-1600 UTC.

This new broadcast probably won’t be heard in the Americas this time of year. During the winter, possibly. If you are outside Europe, you can tune in and decode from http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901 in the Netherlands, or from another SDR in Europe.

Thanks for the many reception reports for Shortwave Radiogram program 1!

SWRG2 includes the image of a vertical line. This might help detect and correct slant in  MFSK images. On the program, I forgot to mention that it helps to record the program. Then you can save one or more segments devoted to images. Play those images repeatedly until the proper Rx adjustment of Fldigi, or of the speed of your recording, results in no slant. The free Audacity software can be helpful for recording, editing, and converting audio, and (using Audacity’s timer record feature), recording while asleep, at work, or otherwise away from the radio.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 2, 1-2 July 2017, all in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz:

 1:52  Program preview
3:05  Our new broadcast for Europe*
7:30  A test and remedies for slanted images*
11:00  Russia considers blocking foreign broadcasts*
14:03  Trump moves to withdraw US water protection*
21:15  Italian Broadcasting Corporation anniversary*
23:46  Closing announcements*

IARUMS Intruder Report

International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 Monitoring System (IARUMS) volunteers continue to document many of the same signals intruding on Amateur Radio bands — some of them audible in other parts of the world, according to the latest editions of the IARUMS Region 1 newsletter. IARUMS Region 1 Coordinator Wolf Hadel, DK2OM, reported last month that his own band monitoring activity has been hampered by interference from a neighbor’s LED lamp, and that Germany’s telecoms regulator was not helpful in resolving the situation, which Hadel says affects all bands from 80 through 10 meters. Nonetheless, he has worked around the local interference to document many of the same bad actors that show up in the IARUMS Region 1 newsletter month after month. IARU Region 1 includes Europe and Africa.
These usual suspects include a Russian Navy F1B RTTY signal on 14.180 MHz in Sevastopol in Crimea, “still active, not regarding official complaints.” Last fall IARUMS had reported that complaints were successful in silencing the intruder. Another Russian F1B RTTY signal had been showing up on 7.051 MHz, “mostly idling and every evening,” Hadel reported in May. German telecoms regulators registered an official complaint, apparently successful in that instance. Hadel also reported “daily” transmissions of music on 7.050 MHz (LSB), possibly originating in Russia.
The “mysterious beacon ‘D’” from Asian Russia has been reported on CW on 7.093.3 kHz, with spurious transmissions on 7.078.6, 7.117.9, and 7.157.2 MHz, as well as outside the band.
Broadcaster Radio Hargaysa in Somalia continued to be reported on 7.120 MHz (AM) daily. Hadel indicated that the signal is audible in Australia and Japan, as well as in Europe and Africa. On 7.175 MHz, Radio Eritrea continues to be jammed daily with white noise transmissions attributed to Radio Ethiopia. IARUMS reported jamming of Radio Taiwan on 7.200 MHz, apparently originating in China and audible “every evening” in Europe. The Chinese “foghorn” over-the-horizon radar (OTH-R) continues to intrude on 20 meters, with signals on 14.211 MHz “jumping to 14.290 and 14.302 MHz.” The Russian “Konteyner RLS” OTH-R remains a problem on 14.280 MHz
In late April, DK2OM monitored a Chinese wideband OTH-R on 15 meters between 21.280 and 21.458 MHz. “No woodpecker, as some hams believe,” Hadel noted. Several OFDM transmissions originating in Moscow have been heard on 20 meters.

Brazilian “pirates” again have been observed on 21.000 MHz (USB). “They are abusing this [frequency] like a telephone between Rio and northern Brazil,” Hadel reported in April. “We suppose fishery traffic.” Just below that signal and barely outside 40 meters (6.999 MHz) was USB interference attributed to Spanish fishing interests, splattering up into the low end of the band. An Iranian radar was reported back on 28.960 MHz, heard in Europe via E-skip.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity  19 - 25 June 2017

Solar activity was very low throughout the period with only isolated  low and mid-level B-class flare activity observed. Regions 2663 (N12, L=095, class/area=Dso/100 on 17 Jun) and 2664 (N18, L=314, class/area=Cso/90 on 25 Jun) each produced B-class flare activity throughout the week while Region 2662 (N12, L=050, class/area=Hsx/170 on 13 Jun) was quiet. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed this period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 19-21 Jun with moderate levels observed on 22-25 Jun.

Geomagnetic field activity was generally quiet and quiet to unsettled throughout the week with isolated active conditions observed on 25 Jun due to the influence of a positive, north polar-connected CH HSS.

Shortwave Radiogram premiers June 25 via WRMI

Hello friends,

The first Shortwave Radiogram has been uploaded to WRMI. Instead of the .wav file that I sent to the VOA North Carolina transmitter site, the file for WRMI is .mp3, 128 kbps. This should be more than adequate for good decoding, but if you experience problems that might be related to the audio format, please let me know.

Another challenge with the first Shortwave Radiogram is sending this email to the approximately one thousand listeners on the VOA Radiogram email list. The VOA Outlook-based email system had a limit of 400 emails, so I sent them in groups of 400, 400, remainder. The radiogram@verizon.net is actually administered by AOL Mail, so we will learn how many recipients they tolerate. If this email comes to you from an address other than radiogram@verizon.net, please continue to use radiogram@verizon.net for emails to Shortwave Radiogram.
To keep things simple, the first VOA Radiogram will all be in MFSK32. It will include six images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 1, 25 June 2017, all in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz:
 1:20  Program preview
 2:34  About Shortwave Radiogram*
 7:10  Soviet-US "hotline" created in 1963*
13:45  More Earth-sized planets found*

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 12 - 18 June 2017

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Regions 2661 (N06, L=211, class/area=Dao/200 on 02 Jun) and 2663 (N12, L=095, class/area=Dso/100 on 17 Jun) were the most prominent regions this period, but only produced low and mid-level B-class flare activity. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels on 12-16 Jun with moderate levels observed on 17-18 Jun.

Geomagnetic field activity reached G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 16 Jun and active levels on 17 Jun due to the influence of a recurrent negative polarity CH HSS. Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet or quiet to unsettled levels throughout the remainder of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 19 June - 15 July 2017

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period with a slight chance for C-class flare activity.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 19-22 and 25-27 Jun with normal and moderate flux levels expected throughout the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 13 Jul with active levels likely on 23-24 Jun, and 14 Jul due to the influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Generally quiet and quiet to unsettled activity is expected throughout the remainder of the period as a nominal solar regime prevails.

This week we talk about his career, Jazz Plaza, International Jazz Day and other topics and we’ll listen to his earlier music. The following week he will converse with us about Blues Con Montuno, and we’ll listen to some of the tracks.
