Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 August 2017

Solar activity ranged from very low to low levels. Very low levels were observed on 26 Aug while low levels were observed from 21-25 Aug and again on 27 Aug. Regions 2671 (N11, L=305, class/area Fkc/430 on 21 Aug) and 2672 (N08, L=227, class/area Dao/270 on 22 Aug) were the only regions on the visible disk and were responsible for a total of 34 C-class flares between the two. The largest events of the period were a C6/1f at 27/1516 UTC from Region 2671, a C5/Sf at 21/0316 UTC from Region 2672, and another C5/1n at 25/0727 UTC with an associated 100 sfu Tenflare from Region 2672. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed during
the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels from 22-27 Aug while very high levels were observed on 21 Aug. The largest flux of the period was 52,010 pfu observed at 21/1725 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm levels. The period began under the waning influence of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speed was decreasing from approximately 700 km/s to around 580 km/s by late on 21 Aug with total field values near 4 nT. By approximately 21/2100 UTC, total field began to increase to 9 nT while the Bz component deflected southward briefly to -8 nT. Solar wind speed increased once again to near 675 km/s at 22/0655 UTC before slowly decreasing once more. A prolonged period of southward Bz was observed between 22/1840-24/1310 UTC reaching a maximum of -6 nT.
The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to unsettled levels on 21 Aug, quiet to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels on 22 Aug, and unsettled to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 23 Aug. Solar wind speed continued to decline to around 330 km/s by early on 25 Aug. Another enhancement in total field was observed at the end of the period to 10 nT with another prolonged period of southward Bz after 27/1200 UTC. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to
unsettled conditions on 24 and 27 Aug while quiet conditions were observed on 25-26 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 August - 23 September 2017

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the forecast period. There is a slight chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares from 28 Aug-02 Sep as Region 2672
transits across the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at mostly high levels throughout the forecast period due to recurrent CH HSS influence. A decrease to moderate levels is
expected on 30-31 Aug, 08 Sep, and again on 13 Sep due to electron redistribution associated with the arrival of the CH HSSs.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 28 Aug, 30 Aug-02 Sep, 08-09 Sep, 13-17 Sep, and 23 Sep with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 31 Aug and 13-16 Sep and G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 14-15 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

BBC braces for backlash over North Korean service

Director of BBC World Service says tensions over North Korea’s nuclear tests vindicate the launch of a targeted service

The BBC is braced for a backlash from the North Korean government about the launch of a new service targeted at the country amid growing international tensions over its nuclear missile tests.
Francesca Unsworth, the director of BBC World Service, said the corporation was wary about launching the new North Korean service next month due to the likely opposition from the government but insisted the fragile political situation vindicated the move.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 August 2017

Solar activity ranged from very low levels to moderate levels over the period. Very low levels were observed on 16-17 Aug, low levels were observed on 14-15 Aug and again from 18-19 Aug, while moderate levels were observed on 20 Aug.

The period began with Region 2671 (N11, L=305, class/area Fkc/410 on 18 Aug) rotating around the east limb. The region was in a growth phase through 18 Aug and rapidly developed from a simple Hax/alpha spot group to an Fkc/beta-gamma group by 17 Aug with an extent reaching 20 heliographic degrees by 20 Aug. Although a magnetically complex spot group, it only managed 11 C-class flares. The largest was a C7/Sf, with an associated Type II (928 km/s) radio sweep, at
19/2155 UTC. Although coronal dimming was observed in SDO/AIA 193 imagery beginning at 19/2143 UTC, there was no observable indications of an associated coronal mass ejection (CME) in
coronagraph imagery. Another region began producing C-class activity on the east limb beginning on 18 Aug. By 20 Aug, the region rotated into view and was numbered 2672 (N05, L=225, class/area Dao/beta on 20 Aug). This region produced an M1 flare (R1-Minor) at 20/0152 UTC. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels from 14-16 Aug and again from 18-20 Aug. A decrease to moderate levels was observed on 17 Aug coinciding with the arrival of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). The largest flux value of the period was 23,392 pfu observed at 20/1540 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. The period began under the waning influence of a negative polarity CH HSS. Solar wind speed decreased
from near 600 km/s to around 360 km/s by 16 Aug while total field was between 3-5 nT. Early on 16 Aug, total field began to increase to a maximum of 13 nT at 17/0740 UTC while the solar wind speed
slowly increased to around 780 km/s by late on 19 Aug as a polar connected, positive polarity CH HSS became geoeffective. By the end of the period, solar wind speeds decreased to near 650 km/s while total field values had decreased to 3 nT. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet levels from 14-16 Aug, followed by quiet to G1(Minor) storm levels from 17-20 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 August - 16 September 2017

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) activity from Regions 2671 and 2672 from 21 Aug-02 Sep and again from 08-16 Sep when both regions return to the visible disk. Very low levels are expected from 03-07 Sep.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels from 21-30 Aug, 01-07 Sep, 11-13 Sep, and again from 15-16 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS influence.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels from 21-22 Aug, 30 Aug-02 Sep, 08-09 Sep, and from 13-16 September with G1 (Minor) storm levels likely on 31 Aug, and 13-16 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

"Observe" August's Eclipse From Your AM Radio
Joe Rao

When the Moon's shadow glides across the U.S. on August 21st, you'll have a chance to hear the eclipse as it happens.

Solar eclipses are more than remarkable visual astronomical phenomena; they’re pretty interesting from a radio viewpoint too. Should overcast skies prevail over your location on eclipse day, you can still make some interesting observations using an AM radio.
Dramatic changes can take place in radio reception when day changes into night and vice versa. Perhaps you’ve had the experience of driving in your car at night, listening to some program on the AM dial, when the announcer will identify the station as WBBM in Chicago. This might seem odd if you are listening from Albany, New York, more than 700 miles (1,100 km) from the Windy City. Yet, cases like this happen every night.

Aussie Senate slams ABC cut to shortwave radio

News.com.au
August 17, 2017
The ABC has been slammed by all sides of politics over its "foolish" decision to cut the transmission of shortwave radio to remote Australia and the Pacific Islands.

The Senate debated a private bill on Thursday by crossbench senator Nick Xenophon to force the ABC to restore transmission after it was cut earlier this year.

"It seems a terrible decision that's been made by the ABC board," Senator Xenophon told parliament, accusing the public broadcaster of ignoring the bush and Australia's neighbors.

The ABC insists listeners can still tune in via FM and AM frequencies, the viewer access satellite television (VAST) service and online.

But senators say the ABC fails to understand those alternative methods are not available to everyone in the bush and the information people are missing out on can be life threatening, such as weather warnings.

Senator Xenophon said the ABC had miscalculated how many people relied on the service. "There are some question marks over the methodology used by the ABC in relation to this." The South Australian senator warned Australia was "foolish" to retreat from the Pacific region by cutting shortwave radio just as other countries like China were expanding shortwave services in the region.
"That footprint is a form of soft diplomacy that is very effective, it wins hearts and minds in the region," he said. Truck drivers in the outback, remote indigenous communities and those in the Pacific no longer had access to Radio Australia.

"But they'll be able to get Radio China - that is wrong," Senator Xenophon said.

Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie lashed out at the ABC's "short-sighted" decision, insisting it had not provided credible evidence as to why the decision was made.

"The ABC has effectively abandoned huge areas of the Northern Territory."
Labor senator for the Northern Territory Malarndirri McCarthy pleaded with the ABC to reverse its "mistake", insisting it had left Australians in remote communities completely isolated and suffering.
"It is absolutely dire."

The Greens said the bill would interfere with the ABC's independence and blamed the decision on government funding cuts.

Artificial Languages on Radio: Esperanto

By far, the most popular artificial language that has ever been created is the language known under the title Esperanto.  The very name, Esperanto, means one who hopes.

It was Dr. Ludwig Zamenhof, a Polish eye doctor, who developed the Esperanto language and he released it to the world in his book, Unua Libro, that was printed in the year 1887.  His intent was that Esperanto should become the world’s major second language, and thus multitudes of people with a myriad of primary languages would be able to intercommunicate with comfort and ease.
The Esperanto language is said to be very easy to learn, and in fact linguists state that it can be mastered in the shortest amount of time for any language upon the Earth.  Esperanto is totally regular in all of its grammatical forms, and it is very flexible in its build up of terminology.  The entire grammar structure can be learned in one lesson.

According to Wikipedia: There are some two million people who have varying degrees of proficiency in the language, including up to two thousand people for whom Esperanto is their mother tongue, having learned it in their childhood home.  Esperantists are found in some 120 countries and its highest volume of usage is found in Europe, Eastern Asia and South America.
The first international congress of Esperanto speakers was held in Boulogne-sur-Mer in France in 1905, and since then there has been an international Esperanto Congress somewhere every year, except during the years of World War 1 and World War 2.  These major annual events attract many participants from throughout the world, usually around 2,000, though on one occasion the attendance reached as high as 6,000.

Interestingly, three different micronations have considered the usage of Esperanto as their national language.  The territory of Neutral Moresnet is a slice of territory at 1½ square miles lying between Belgium and Germany.  Due to anomalies in political history, Moresnet retained some form of neutral independence for more a century, running from 1816 to 1920.  As part of its move for continued independence back in the early 1900s, Moresnet considered adopting Esperanto as its national language.  (Much of the territory of Moresnet has subsequently been incorporated into neighboring Belgium.)

Two other micronations, far less real than Moresnet, considered adopting Esperanto as the national language.  These micronations were Rose Island off the east coast of Italy, and Molossia in the American state of Nevada.

Rose Island was a manmade platform in the Adriatic Sea back half a century ago and it supported tourist enterprises, such as a restaurant, a post office and apparently also a radio station.
Molossia was a small farm of 1½ acres near Dayton in Nevada which together with the farm house, was declared independent as a micronation, also half a century ago.  The supposedly national language for both of these tourist ventures, Rose Island and Molossia, was Esperanto.
According to statistics recently released by Duolingo, currently a million people are studying

Esperanto on their language instruction website.  The Google translation site has also added Esperanto to their list of translation capabilities.  Another report states that more than 75 universities in more than 25 countries have at some time given instruction in Esperanto.
Esperanto is currently the language of instruction at the International Academy of Sciences in San Marino, Italy; Vatican Radio uses Esperanto on its website; the United States army published a phrase book for its soldiers in Esperanto in the 1950s; in the summer of 1924, the American Radio Relay League adopted Esperanto as its official international auxiliary language; and over the years, several shortwave stations have inserted Esperanto programming into their scheduling.
Back in the early days of radio, a week long series of International Radio Broadcast Tests was conducted with the participation of many prominent stations in North America and Europe.  These international test broadcasts began on November 24, 1924, when ten stations in the United States and Canada presented programming in Esperanto.

In 1934, the radio station VN at La Doua-Lyons in France with 1½ kW on 644 kHz conducted a listener contest with seven people from different national backgrounds, all speaking in Esperanto in the same radio program.  The 1949 edition of the World Radio Handbook gave a list of some of the radio stations in Europe with programming in Esperanto.

A quick search on the internet reveals that several international shortwave stations are these days on the air in the Esperanto language.  These stations include: Radio Polonia in Warsaw Poland, China Radio International, Radio Havana Cuba, Vatican Radio, and RAI in Rome Italy.  Radio Polonia, in the country where Esperanto as an international second language was launched (Poland), states that over the years they have broadcast more than 25,000 programs in Esperanto.
On the radio scene, Muzaiko is a 24 hour internet radio stream in Esperanto, with some English inserts.  Their website is muzaiko.info.

QOTW163 QSL of the Week: QSL Card printed in the Esperanto Language

Back a decade or so ago, there was an amateur DXpedition to the North African exclave of Melilla, a small Spanish settlement measuring less than five square miles, at the Mediterranean edge of North Africa.  This territory has been allotted the amateur callsign prefix EA9.  Their QSL card shows a photograph in color of old historic buildings, and the language on the card is the international auxiliary language Esperanto.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 August 2017

Solar activity was very low. Region 2670 (S05, L=119, class/area  Cso/160 on 02 Aug) continued it transit across the visible disk during the period as a simple Hsx/alpha spot group with no flaring
activity observed. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels from 07-11 Aug with a peak flux of 11,301 pfu observed at 07/1440 UTC. Electron flux values decreased to normal to moderate levels on 12-13 Aug due to the arrival of a negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS).

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled levels during the period. Solar wind speed was in decline at the beginning of the period from a waning positive polarity CH HSS. Solar wind
speeds declined from near 570 km/s early in the period to nominal levels by late on 08 Aug. Total field ranged from 2-6 nT through 10 Aug. On 11 Aug, total field and solar wind began to increase as a negative polarity CH HSS became geo effective. Total field increased to a maximum of 12 nT at 12/0135 UTC while solar wind increased to around 650 km/s by 13/1750 UTC. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet levels from 07-10 Aug and quiet to unsettled levels from 11-12
Aug. Geomagnetic activity decreased to quiet levels again on 13 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 August - 09 September 2017
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. A chance for C-class flare activity is possible from 14-28 Aug as a new active region rotates across the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels from 14-16, 18-30 Aug and again from 01-07 Sep due to CH HSS influence. Normal to moderate levels are
expected on 17, 31 Aug and again on 08-09 Sep. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach unsettled to active levels on 14, 16-22, 30-31 Aug and from 01-02 and 08-09 Sep with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels are likely on 17-18 and 31Aug due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Morning Chorus: Pyongyang’s 6 am wake up call

Why does an eerie electronic ballad play across North Korea’s capital every morning?

Greg Noone
It was early in the morning, but Mark Fahey had been awake for hours. A biomedical engineer turned North Korean propaganda expert, he had spent most of the night tinkering with a radio in his room at the Yanggakdo International Hotel, secretly recording the opening moments of Pyongyang FM Pangsong.
While he listened to the station’s typical offering of classical music and propaganda, another microphone and recorder were set up next to an open window to capture the sounds of the city as it roused itself awake. It was August 2011, and the sun hung low on the horizon. Fahey expected to pick up the sound of the dredging work taking place along the Taedong River.
Instead, he heard music.

From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot schedules, August 13-19

From the Isle of Music, August 13-19
More dance music this week…
This week, our special guest is Fernando Dewar, leader of Septeto Santiaguero, Cuba’s best working Septeto today and a winner of Cubadisco and Latin GRAMMY awards. He will be talking about their new album Raiz, and we will be listening to some of it. Also, some music from Andy Rubal, a nominee in the Popular Dance Music – Newer Artists category in Cubadisco 2017.
Four opportunities to listen on shortwave:
1. For Eastern Europe but audible well beyond the target area in all directions with 100Kw, Sunday 1500-1600 UTC on SpaceLine, 9400 KHz, from Kostinbrod, Bulgaria (1800-1900 MSK)
2. For the Americas and parts of Europe, Tuesday 0000-0100 UTC on WBCQ, 7490 KHz from Monticello, ME, USA (Monday 8-9PM EDT in the US)
3 & 4. For Europe and sometimes beyond, Tuesday 1900-2000 UTC and Saturday 1200-1300 UTC on Channel 292, 6070 KHz from Rohrbach, Germany.

Episode 25 of Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot, a musical variety program that features a little bit of everything from around the planet, will air on WBCQ the Planet, 7490 KHz, Thursday, August 17 from 2300-2330 UTC (7:00pm-7:30pm EDT in the Americas). This week we spend some quality time roaming the Balkans with a little surf rock gibberish on the side.  This week’s episode includes a contest.
WBCQ’s signal has frequently been reaching the Americas, East to West, down at least as far as Sao Paolo, Brasil, and well into Central Europe of late.

All 60's broadcast slated for August 14

A new broadcast is listed on Channel 292's schedule for Monday, August 14. The broadcast is called 'All 60s', and is shown as operating on 6070 kHz from 1200 to 1500 UTC. I have no idea who is behind the station, and I don't recall seeing it on there previously.

For German listeners there is another of the occasional 'Frequenzfieber' broadcasts with Christian this evening (Saturday 12th) at 1900 to 2000 UTC. It was noticeable last Sunday that the 'Paranoia' podcast from 2000 to 2100 was in the clear for the entire hour now that the Vatican no longer comes on and flattens it at 2040 UTC.

Excellent reception of Hitmix Radio on 5955 kHz with their 100kW signal here in north west England this afternoon from 1200 to 1500 UTC, and a lot of familiar voices were noted in various time slots.
73 for now,
(Alan Dale/BDXC)

Atlantic Oldies schedule information

Hi All,

Rick Ainley of Atlantic Oldies 2NG reports via their newsletter that the station will be back on Shortwave this weekend via Channel 292 and WBCQ,  details below.

Alan.

Atlantic Oldies 2NG Newsletter Hi,
First let me thank all of you for the kind words and replies recently after the closure of the 2NG streams. I will reply, there are just a lot!

I wanted to quickly tell you that we will be on ShortWave this weekend. It's a three hour block as follows.

  • Hour 1 - All Sixties with Rick Ainley
  • Hour 2 & 3 - Bill Rollins Teatime Pirate Radio Special.

The shows can be heard as follows.

Saturday 12th August
WBCQ 7490kHz (N. America)
1700-2000 EDT (2100-0000 UTC)
Sunday 13th August
Channel 292 6070kHz (Europe)
1100-1400 UTC (1200-1500 BST)
A common question received if it's available online. 2NG will not be streaming however we believe WBCQ has a stream of the 7490kHz service. Check out www.wbcq.com. There is a web radio in the Netherlands which tends to work well with the Channel 292 service. That can be found at http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/
We planned this weekend on SW before the whole royalty thing blew up. It's remembering the 50th anniversary of the Marine Broadcasting Offence Act in 1967 that silenced the ships. All but one.....

If you get a chance, try and listen.

Best Regards, Richard
(BDXC)
